Black paintings
What an exciting young German artist he is! That is what one hears from people referring to Florian Heinke. And why? His colours- actually- the black colour and the natural white remaining from shadows of the darkness raise many questions in every single spectator.
Florian Heinke, a Frankfurt born German artist whose unique vivid paintings amaze many for the stories they tell, understands painting as a mere representation of processed life views and approaches. That outspoken he is when it comes to his own being.
A spontaneous smile crossed over the question about the reason why he opted to "black-white" paintings. "Mm, black-white paintings provide a better contrast, more contrasts, that ́s it," he answered with a candid sarcastic looking smile. Heinke describes that as the driving force for his work as a junior student at the School of Art. According to him, emotions are due to contrasts. They can be best represented by generating contrasts,"That ́s the way how everything started, and it felt great and I still continue to love it," adds Heinke.
Similarities remain when it comes to issues tackled by some artists. In Heike ́s case, they also apply. "These are sociopolitical issues," he reflects.
"But I wonder whether that ́s me. Are all these issues part of my little world that raises concerns and doubts in myself. Topics are part of, I think, the day life and I try to compress and translate them into paintings. I try to compose the day life into a political form. That ́s the way I implement it," Heinke explains.
The Artist is, however, aware that the social target of his works would have so far be different if he had used other colours. But is that what he works for, for the attention of others? "No", Heinke replies emphatically. There was not a desire in Heinke ́s sociopolitical approach to catch the attention of so many people. The driving force was the artistic composition from the observation of his little world.
"I just wanted to represent what I saw and see, my little world, just compose and do one painting at a time. And the best scenario could be an exhibition for me to have the opportunity to compile the thoughts of the paintings done and present them reinforced as whole. Of course I love to share it with people, for sure. But it was not my driving force, not my ambition" added Heinke.
Surely. That sharing remains his pilot in life. Florian Heinke believes in the individual fulfilment of his soul by sharing, the simplest exchange of experiences. His description of satisfaction starts by breaking it down as follows: "First, when I sit down together with my wife and friends and talk, just talk, searching for answers to topics. Finding results from searching. It is something that happens very often. Sometimes one finds a sort of treasure when answers to questions are found. And I can figure out which form I can give to these thoughts, these treasures. These are beautiful moments; second, I realise the form for that brainstorming and try to put into paintings; and third, when I paint and finish the painting, I leave it for two or three days, go down to my house and come back to see if it turned out to be a good work, it is when it comes to the third phase and I say "yes, I got it". That ́s the most satisfying moment."
That taking distance from what one makes still remains a habit that Heinke practices. "Yes, I do it often, every two months I try to observe old paintings. I can recall exactly time and circumstances in which I did that work. Somethings I would see like someone else ́s soul behind the painting, awesome!" he confirmed.
By being that self critical, Heinke does acknowledge clear development in himself as an artist. "Sure, from my time as a student to date, I was able to define a format I wanted to give to my works, I have now a clear idea about what I want to do with black-white paintings. I just stay loyal to that very early original thought of black and white resources, thus exploring different ways of composition," he reveals."My work takes form following a conceptual model. I do one painting at a time. One follows the other, it ́s like a series content-wise," he says.
"The issues that I address are close related to what catches my attention at a given moment. I do a painting, I finish it, and with the time I can see if it is good or not," the Prince songs lover explains.
Consequently, one understands a close tie of one work to another. "After this reflection, new questions and concerns arise, thus giving birth to new subjects and issues for new pieces of work. That ́s the way it works in my specific case," Heinke says.
He explains that the sensibility led him to art. Being that sensible as a kid allowed him to care for his surroundings and to try to process all these in his today ́s work. He acknowledges that he was very sensible at an early age, and this was a problem later as a teenager. He rediscovered and learnt it again, thus dealing successfully with it though.
